Professional development is learning to earn or maintain professional credentials such as academic degrees to formal coursework, conferences and informal learning opportunities situated in practice. It has been described as intensive and collaborative, ideally incorporating an evaluative stage. There are a variety of approaches to professional development, including consultation, coaching, communities of practice, lesson study, mentoring, reflective supervision and technical assistance.

If a professional is not taking care of themselves, their efficacy when dealing with clients can suffer. This 80-minute presentation will focus on counselor wellness and self-care and the potential for concerns such as compassion fatigue and “burnout” when one is neglecting one’s well-being.

The use of self-disclosure can have major implications on a client’s well-being. At the end of this presentation, training participants will have a better understanding of how to decide if using self-disclosure is in the best interests of the client.
