This training will describe the special set of circumstances facing the older client population in treatment, recovery, and prevention. This course will present how to manage and coordinate care for substance use disorder with an older adult. Participants will gain a basic understanding of the aging process and the risks, signs, symptoms and the impact of alcohol and drugs that need to be taken into consideration when working with this population. We will engage in a discussion of the importance of family engagement in treatment and care.

Course Description: This training was developed in response to a Justice Center 2018-2019 report that identified a higher incidence of sexual misconduct and boundary violation incidents at OASAS facilities. The training will review examples of the most egregious, boundary, and professional, ethical violations and explore factors that contributed to such violations. We will explore case examples of what happens to service recipients that are the victims of professional helpers that engage in this behavior, as well as discuss prevention and intervention strategies to address such occurrences.
Objectives: • Explore contributing factors that lead to sexual misconduct
• Examine boundaries and ethical conduct
• Gain the ability to identify “red flags” and intervene
• Understand the need for reporting incidents of sexual misconduct
Teen Intervene is a tested, Evidence-Based Program (EBP) for teenagers (12 - 19 years old) experiencing mild to moderate problems associated with alcohol or other drug use, including gambling. Teen Intervene integrates Stages of Change Model, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to help teens reduce and ultimately eliminate their chemical use.
The objectives are: • To engage teens using the Teen Intervene interviewing techniques. • Identify three (3) reasons teens have chosen to use alcohol or substances. • To learn three (3) effective ways to help teens explore the impact that substance use has in their lives. • To learn three (3) basic skills to intervene when substance use/gambling is suspected in the teenage population. Seven (7) OASAS clock hours are approved toward OASAS credentials: CASAC Renewal (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor - Renewal only), CPP and CPS (Credentialed Prevention Professional and Credentialed Prevention Specialist - Initial Section 1, and Renewal). SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) is a preventive public health approach to identify and intervene with persons whose pattern of use puts them at risk for, or are experiencing, substance related health problems, and when indicated, deliver referrals to treatment for persons with a high potential for substance use disorders.

This training will provide Participants with a systemic, relational, and culturally sensitive framework for engaging families impacted by substance use. The evidence base demonstrated that family involvement increases the effectiveness of substance use treatment, and yet few service providers working in the field of substance abuse treatment have had access to training in family therapy (FT). Providers equipped with a systemic, relational and culturally sensitive framework and trained in key principles and techniques of FT will be better able to provide “family friendly” therapeutic support to clients, thereby increasing the effectiveness of their services.

Trauma-informed care is an approach to engaging people with histories of trauma. It teaches participants how to recognize trauma symptoms in self and others and acknowledges the role that trauma has played in peoples' lives. This training is designed as a practical overview and will cover a basic understanding of what is trauma/ adversity, how it is experienced, and the connection of trauma to substance use.
Objectives: • Define different types of traumas. • Explain the findings of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study. • Understand how trauma/ adversity impacts individuals. • Discuss the relationship between trauma and substance use. • Identify symptoms of trauma that may indicate a trauma history via case study.
