The most current Therapeutic Relationships and Universal Safety Training (TRUST) was developed through a collaboration between OASAS and OMH. The objectives of TRUST training are listed below.
The main focus of this training is empowering staff members to prevent and/or intervene in the escalation process of our program participants. Many skills emphasized in the TRUST training are related to effective, person-centered language and communication abilities.
Increased knowledge and competency in Motivational Interviewing practices will be a powerful aid in reaching the objectives and skill sets involved in TRUST.
These are the objectives we will address in this Train-the-Trainer. By the end of the two and a half days, you will be able to:
Define trauma: We will learn about what may cause trauma, and the different types of trauma.
Identify the impact of trauma: Identify the impact of trauma biologically and behaviorally on a person and learn about the role of the environment on recovery.
Describe the approaches and roadblocks: We will learn about the approaches that drive every aspect of the work we do and discuss the things that can get in the way.
Identify factors that affect behavior: Identify the three factors that motivate behavior and explore why this is important to all stake holders.
Demonstrate skills: We will learn techniques to use throughout the day to help people and get to know them better while strengthening relationships.
Demonstrate the dialectical approach: We will explain and practice an approach to focus on finding a solution together for when there are conflicting ideas rather than engaging in power struggles.
Demonstrate ways to set limits: We will also learn about the skills needed to set limits and avoid power struggles. In order to practice these skills all staff will need to understand the boundaries of their setting, their own personal limits, and understand how to convey them in a compassionate and clear way.
